Abstract

Objective: To compare the macular pigment optical density between amblyopic eyes and healthy eyes in anisometropic amblyopic patients. Material and Method: Patients with anisometropic amblyopia were separated into three groups (minimal, moderate and severe) according to the best corrected visual acuity levels. Macular pigment optical density was measured with the macular pigment optical den-sity module of Zeiss Visucam 200 device. Mean optical density, maximum optical density, volume, and area parameters were calculated and compared. Results: Thirty-four patients were enrolled. The mean ages were 9.1±2.4 years (range=5-13 years). Twelve of 34 cases (35.3%) had mild, 10 of 25 cases (29.4%) moderate and 12 of 34 cases (35.3%) severe amblyopia. The Mean optical density values were 0.123±0.026 den-sity units in amblyopic eyes and 0.148±0.036 d.u in the other eyes (p=0.001). The max optical density values were 0.319±0.072 density units in amblyopic eyes and 0.370±0.066 density units in the other ones (p=0.006). There wasn’t a significant correlation between am-blyopia severity and the mean optical density and max optical density values (respectively, p=0.071 and p=0.932). Conclusion: The macular pigment optical density was decreased in amblyopic eyes, this may be related to the morphological differences between the amblyopic and healthy eyes. The relationship between macular pigment optical density and ambliyopia should be further in-vestigated.
