Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the safety and effectivity of intracorneal ring implantation (ICRI) in pro- gressive keratoconus patients. Material and Method: Fifty seven eyes of 45 keratoconus patients who underwent ICRI (Ferrara Rings, AJL Ophthalmic, Alava, Spain) between 2008 and 2011 years at Türkiye Hospital Eye Clinic, were involved in this study. It is a retrospective study. The patients were followed up 12 months at 3 months intervals. Results: Double ICRs were implanted in 52 eyes and single ICR was implanted in 5 eyes. Mean age of the patients was 26.84 ± 8.76 years. Mean keratometry value decreased from 52.54±5.02 Diopters (D) to 48.83±4.46 D at 12th month postoperatively (p=0.000). BCDVA improved from 0.30±0.21 (Snellen Chart) to 0.58 ± 0.21 (p=0.000). Mean spherical error de- creased from -4.51±3.30 D preoperatively to -1.81±2.29 D at postoperative 12th month (p=0,000). Mean cylindrical error decreased from -6.26±2.66 D to -3.75±2.59 D (p=0.000). Post-operative complications were corneal thinning and melting in one case, and descement membrane wrinkles in one case. Conclusion: ICRI in progressive keratoconus patients decreases keratometric and astig- matic values, increases visual acuity; and also its complication rate is low
