Abstract

To investigate the results of diagnostic mediastinoscopy. prospectively in patients who had mediastinal mass and could not be diagnosed with the other diagnostic techniques. Twenty patients with mediastinal mass underwent diagnostic mediastinoscopy between May 1996 and June 2000 at Department of Thoracic Surgery Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine. Under general anesthesia standard cervical mediastinoscopy was performed by same surgical team. Of the patients 14 were male and 6 were female, the mean age was 41.2 (range 17-65 years). in histopathologic examination, 10 patients, (50%) had tuberculosis, 3 (15%) had sarcoidosis, 2 (10%) had lung cancer, 2 (10%) had lymph node hyperplasia, l (5%) had non-Hodgkin lymphoma, l (5%) had mediastinal aberrant thyroid tissue and l (5%) had subcarinal brochogenic cyst. There were not any complications. The results confirm that mediastinoscopy is an effective diagnostic procedure in patients with mediastinal lesions, which could not diagnosed with less invasive techniques.
