Abstract

This study investigates the causes of debasements, defined as the reductions in the silver content of money, in Ottoman history. For this purpose, it puts Ottoman debasement series in comparative perspective with debasement series that we compiled for various European states and evaluates the evidence based on the theoretical explanations offered in the literature. The findings support the conjecture that debasements were mainly motivated by fiscal needs. We also find that the absence of organized economic interests to oppose debasements contributed to Ottoman debasements that lasted into the 19th century.
