Abstract

Basal ganglion calcification is a common incidental finding in computed tomography of brain. There is a number of causes for etiology. Idiopathic cases are named as Fahr disease. Parathyroid diseases leads the secondary causes. In this retrospective evaluation, we evaluated parathyroid diseases in patients with basal ganglion calcification. We evaluated retrospectively medical records of patients who were referred to endocrinology outpatient clinic between January 2013 to April 2016 due to cerebral calcification. Clinical features, laboratory data, and imaging were evaluated. Fourteen patients were evaluated. Three out of 6, who met inclusion criteria, were idiopathic cases and 3 had iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism which developed as a complication after thyroid surgery. In the remaining 7 patients, typical radiologic findings were absent and secondary hyperparathyroidism due to vitamin D deficiency was evident as the sole endocrinopathology. Aside from idiopathic cases, it should be kept in mind that parathyroid diseases (either idiopathic or iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism) play an important role in basal ganglion calcification and the patients should be sought for it.
