Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate frequency of pain and discomfort in the musculoskeletal system among dentists. A 33-item questionnaire concerning musculoskeletal discomfort was satisfactoryly completed by 45 dentists and 45 controls. Seventy five point six percent of the dentists and 55.6% of the controls had experienced some sort of musculoskeletal pain during the last 12 months. The most common discomfort of the dentists was low back pain (46.7%); whereas in controls it was neck pain (24.4%). In general, the musculoskeletal discomfort of dentists did not differ from that found in the control group. When localisation was considered, the occupational specific difference between dentists and reference group was the occurrence of low back pain (p<0.05). In respect to gender, difference was found comparing the occurrence of general musculoskeletal pain between female dentists and females in the control group :(p<0.05). When localisation was considered, the occupational specific difference between female dentists and female control group was the occurrence of low back pain (p<0.05) and shoulder pain (p<0.05). Perceived work load of dentists was positively correlated with severity of pain and using fixed patient's chair(p<0.05). In addition, there was a negative correlation among performance of dentists and presence of pain, severity of pain, low back pain, hand-wrist pain (p<0.05). There was no correlation between musculoskeletal pain and various working positions of dentists. The findings suggest that, particular locations of pain could be related to dental practice.
