Abstract

Background/aim: Studies on the frequency of reference errors in medical journals have been published previously, which demonstrated high rate of errors in reference citations. In this study we aim to analyse the reference error rate of three pediatric surgical journals using NLM's PUBMED. Method: We have reviewed the reference citations in the first issues (No: 1) of year 2001 of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery (Vol: 36), Pediatric Surgery International (Vol: 17) and European Journal of Pediatric Surgery (Vol: 11) to determine their accuracy with PUBMED. All of the references were examined from each volume. References in non-journal items, such as books, proceedings of scientific meetings, and newspaper articles were excluded. All citations were examined in detail by dividing them into six component elements and compared with the PUBMED records. Results: PUBMED had a high positive hit rate (92.8 %) for references. The overall error rate was found 33.7 %. Individual error rates were as follows: Journal of Pediatric Surgery 32.1 %, Pediatric Surgery International 37.9 % and European Journal of Pediatric Surgery 34.6 %. Overall 70.2 % of references contained errors in one element; the remaining contained errors in two elements. No reference contained errors in three or more elements. The most common error was the authors' surnames and initials (56.2 %). Conclusion: The PUBMED gives a good opportunity to investigate the accuracy and has a high positive hit rate (92.8 %). However the rate of citation errors in the pediatric surgery journals are also found high compared with to other medical journals. To avoid this and make a healthy search the contributors of this journals and corresponding authors need to take more care in checking their references before publication.

Özet

Amaç: Tıp yayınlarındaki kaynak hatalarının sıklığı üzerine yapılan çalışmalar kaynak kullanımında yüksek hata oranları göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada NLM-PUBMED kullanılarak, üç uluslararası çocuk cerrahisi dergisinin kaynaklarındaki yazılım hataları oranının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Surgery International, European Journal of Pediatric Surgery dergilerinin 2001 yılı ilk sayılarında kullanılan tüm kaynaklar PUBMED yoluyla tarandı. Kitap bölümleri, gazete yazıları, kongre kitapçıkları ve benzeri dergi dışı kaynaklar ça-lışmadan çıkarıldı. Tüm kaynaklar 6 parametre (1. Yazar 2.
