Abstract

Our treatment strategy and results in lung abscess, a very rare disease of childhood, were evaluated retrospectively. Method: Medical records of children with lung abscess, who were treated between March 1998 and May 2001 were reviewed. The patients were initially treated with intravenous antibiotics and chest physiotherapy. A tube thoracostomy was performed when empyema was encountered. Thoracotomy was done when the medical treatment failed. All children were reevaluted 6 months after discharge. Results: Thirteen children were treated for lung abscess. Eight patients were cured with medical therapy. A tube thoracostomy was performed in 3 cases who had been complicated with empyema. In 2 cases, who did not response to the medical therapy, wedge resection, and drainage and decortication procedures were done, respectively. As detected clinically and radiologically, all children were disease free 6 months after discharge. Conclusion: Children with lung abscess responded well to the medical therapy. Surgical management, should be reserved for those, in whom the antibiotic therapy and physiotherapy fail.
