Abstract

Background/Aim: The purpose of this study is to analyze the data from our experience with pilomatrixoma in children, discuss the diagnosis and management and review the relevant literature. It also aimes to better familiarize the otolaryngologists and pediatric surgeons with this entity. Method: A retrospective chart review of children with pilomatrixoma was performed between the years 1995 and 2002. The records of these patients were analyzed to determine sex, age at presentation, location, and duration of mass at initial evaluation, clinical presentation, treatment modalities, recurrences, and histopathological findings. Results: Of the patients, ten (56%) were male and eight (44%) were female with an average age of 8.6 years at diagnosis. The presenting symptom was usually a subcutaneous palpable single nodule. Multiple lesions were found in 1 patient (5.5%). Local excision was performed without any complication. These lesions appeared as pilomatrixoma in histopathological examination. Mean follow-up was 3.7 years and there were no recurrences. Conclusion: Although too small for accurate statistical evaluation, our series is unique in that there is a male preponderance and no familial occurrence. Pilomatrixoma should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of children with intracutaneous or subcutaneous nodules. With a correct diagnosis and the knowledge of pilomatrixoma's benign course, parents can be reassured that complete cure is to be expected.

Özet

Önbilgi/Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, çocuklardaki pilomatriksoma ile ilgili verileri değerlendirip tanı ve tedavi yöntemlerini literatür bilgileri ışığında tartışarak kulak-burun-boğaz hastalıkları uzmanları ve çocuk cerrahlarını bu konuya yakınlaştırmaktır. Yöntem: Kliniğimizde 1995-2002 yılları arasında pilomatriksoma tanısı almış hastalar, geriye dönük olarak cinsiyet, başvuru yaşı, başvuru anında kitlenin büyüklüğü ve yerleşim yeri, klinik bulgular, tedavi şekli, yineleme ve histopatolojik bulgular açısından incelenmiştir. Bulgular: Hastaların 10'u (% 56) erkek, 8'i (% 44) kız olup; tanı anındaki yaş ortalaması 8.6 yıldır.
