Abstract

Objective: Although mumps is usually mild disease and, have complete healing, but severe complications such as meningoencephalitis can occur. The aim of the present study is to evaluate our cases of mumps meningoencephalitis. Material and Methods: 325 patients with mumps meningoencephalitis were evaluated in our hospital between January 1999 and December 2004 retrospectively. Results: The mean age of the patients was 7.3±2.3 (1-14) years, 244 were male (75.1%) and 81 were female (24.9). The incidence of mumps meningoencephalitis was higher in 2004 (116 cases, 35.7%). The most common clinical sign and symptoms were vomiting (94.1%), fever (76.8%), headache (51.3%) and meningismus (94.7%), parotitis (32.6%). Remission was obtained in all patients except one patient, and he had permanent hearing loss. Conclusion: It is emphasized that routine mumps vaccine is necessary to prevent of mumps and its complications.
