Abstract

In this paper, first the excavation principles of full-face runnel boring machines were explained and then the design parameters of these machines were examined by using design specifications of 200 individual machines utilised between 1953 and 1993.First, the relationships between the machine diameter and some design parameters (power, thrust, torque and weight) were statistically examined. It was seen that power, thrust, torque and weight show an exponential or power trendline with increasing machine diameter. Then, a nomogram was developed to predict some design parameters for a given machine diameter. When the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock is known, the design parameters can approximately be estimated for a machine having known diameter using the graphs plotted and the nomogram developed.
