Abstract

In wastewater treatment plants sludge, obtained as filter cake, is an inevitable by-product. Sludge disposal is becoming an ever increasing problem as the cities get highly urbanized. With the aim of recycling this waste, in this work possibility of direct and indirect addition of the sludge into cement is studied. Sludge samples were taken from Ankara Wastewater Treatment Plant (second largest plant in Europe) and physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of the sludge were determined. Initially strength, setting and soundness tests were carried out on samples having 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% dry sludge and sludge ash by weight, the results were compared with those of the reference sample. The comparison reveals that maximum addition of the dry sludge can be only 5% while sludge ash is added up to 20% without deteriorating cement properties.
