Abstract

Due to nature of surface mining methods, someparts of reserves are inevitably abondoned under slopes where stripping ratio exceeds the economical limit. An important part of the reserve that is lost by abondoning under slopes can be produced by highwall mining method. Apprecaible amounts of coal has been produced by using highwall mining method in the world whereas no application of the method has been recorded in Turkey despite of having numerous open pit mines. In this paper, four different highwall mining method alternatives are proposed for Tunçbilek Region. One of these alternatives with varieties of backfilling and pillar method was analysed by means of numerical modelling with$FLAC^{3D}$. Modelling results have revealed that any major instability problem would not be encountered in production galeries, pillars and slopes.
