Abstract

AIM: Trichomonas vaginalis causes trichomoniasis which is a sexually transmitted disease with worldwide distrubution. In our country, very few cytological studies concerning with cellular changes caused by Trichomonas vaginalis has been made. For this purpose, in our study, we aimed to detect the cellular changes and cytological findings in detailed that brought about by this parasite. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Totally 400 cervical and vaginal smears were taken from women were stained by Papanicolaou stain and then cytologically evaluated, Trichomonas vaginalis were detected in 20 cases on cervical and vaginal smears and they were included to the study group. 267 cases in which no infection agents were detected were included to the control group. Statistical analyses were conducted with the chi-square, Fisher's exact test. But also all smears were evaluated according to cellular changes caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and compared statistically with the control group. RESULTS: In presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, cytoplasmic changes such as perinuclear halo, pseudoeosinophili, abnormal staining, nuclear changes such as karyorhexis, karyolysis, karyopyknosis, biniicleation, swelling to the normal size and hyperkromatism were detected on cervical and vaginal smears .In addition to these cellular changes, it was detected that the presence of mostly cornified, precornified cells, abundant polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL), metaplastic cells, Lactobacillus and coccus. The difference in presence of Trichomonas vaginalis with cytoplasmic changes was statistically significant. (p<0.05) CONCLUSION: Cellular changes and cytological findings detected in this study will posses an important role in diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis. For this reason, these findings will help cytopathologist on cytologic diagnosis.
