Abstract

PURPOSE: Jn this study, \v,e have aimed to determine the value of routine chest radiography in the detection of congenital heart disease in neonatal period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chest x-rays of 131 neonates with clinically and echocardiographically proven congenital heart disease, and 44 normal neonates were examined by a radiologist who was unaware of the purpose of the study and was asked to evaluate the films. 1 RESULTS: As a result, Jn the detection of congenital heart disease in the neonatal period, chest radiography has a sensitivity of 38%, specificity of 86%, a positive predictive value of 89%, negative predictive value of 32%. CONCLUSION: Plain chest films have limited value in the detection of congenital heart disease in the neonatal period. However', since- the 'positive predictive value is high, when there is cardiomegaly, further evaluation is strongly recommended.
