Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare quality of life of patients who underwent laparoscopic hernia repair with the open mesh repair. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 50 consecutive patients with inguinal hernia were randomly allocated to perform laparoscopic (n=25) (LHR) or open mesh (n=25) repair (OHR). Short form 36 was obtained before operation, postoperative 1st (PO1) and 10th (PO10) days. The form was divided to eight subcategories and these subcategories were evaluated within and between groups. RESULTS: In laparoscopic group, parameters were totally restricted and the pain increased in PO1 but these results were not statistically significant when compared with their preoperative values. In open group, physical functioning decreased and pain increased statistically significantly when compared PO1 to their preoperative values (p=0.017, p=0.048, respectively). However, other parameters decreased but these decreases were not statistically significant. LHR was superior to OHR in terms of physical functioning, social functioning and pain in comparison to PO1 values between groups. In PO10 evaluation, values of LHR patients were approximately equal or better than their preoperative values. However, values of OHR were worse than their preoperative values, but the differences were not statistically significant in either group. When compared LHR with OHR better results were obtained in all parameters. CONCLUSION: When compared the quality of life were better in patients who underwent LHR than OHR.
