Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effects of epidural analgesia on neonatal and maternal outcomes including Beck Depression Scores. Materials and Methods: Forty patients with uncomplicated pregnancies who presented in spontaneous labor to Yüzüncü Yıl University Faculty of Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics Department were enrolled into this prospective study and divided into two groups, group given epidural analgesia and control group. Clinical characteristics recorded included labor and delivery characteristics and neonatal outcome. Mood scores were evaluated by Beck Depression Scores at the end of the labor. Statistical analysis included Student's t test and Mann Whitney U test. Results: No significant differences were noted in age, gravidity and parity between the two groups. There were no significant differences between the two groups in Bishop's scores, labor duration and mode of delivery. Epidural analgesia revealed no detrimental effects on neonatal birth weight, Apgar 1 and 5 minutes, cord pH, cord pCO2, O2 saturation. However, Beck Depression scores were significantly lower in the group given epidural analgesia (8.2±4.8 vs. 13.1±5.5; p=0.005). Conclusion: Epidural analgesia has no detrimental effects on progress and outcome of labor and neonatal outcomes but improves Beck depression scores.
