Abstract

Objective: Weight gain has been observed in early stage breast cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy. This study aimed to determine the amount of weight gain and the factors affecting weight gain. Material and Methods: Breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy between May 2002 - May 2003 were evaluated prospectively. The patients' weights were measured at the start and after each cycle of chemotherapy. The patients were grouped as those with a weight gain less than and more than 3 kg. These groups and possible factors affecting weight gain were compared in terms of patient and tumor characteristics and chemotherapy applications. Results: 88 patients were included in the study. A significant relation between the amount of weight gain and patient's menopausal status, body-mass index, disease stage, tumor grade, hormonal receptor status, the presence and the number of axillary involvement was not detected. However, weight gain was significantly higher in patients who received 6 cycles compared to 4 cycles of chemotherapy (p=0.002) and treated with doxorubicin compared to epirubicin (p=0.04). In addition, increased food consumption and a decrease in exercise were reported more frequently in patients with weight gain. Conclusion: Adjusting drug doses according to the weight gain during chemotherapy would result in an effective treatment. Without dose adjustment, an increase in local recurrence and a decrease in survival might be expected.
