Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and a better glycemic control in post menopausal women with type II diabetes mellitus (Type II DM). Materials and Method: Fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, and HbA1c levels were measured before and 8 weeks after beginning HRT in 44 postmenopausal women with type II DM in Zekai Tahir Burak Women Health Education and Research Hospital Menopause Clinic between June 2002 and January 2003. And the relationship between HRT and the degree of glycemic control was studied prospectively. Results: For diabetic postmenopausal women who were already taking their antidiabetic treatment, mean fasting blood glucose level, mean postprandial blood glucose level and mean HbA1c level were 147.64±33.01 mg/dl, 198.18±65.49 mg/dl, and 6.7865%±1.475% respectively before HRT use. For the same patient population without making any change in their antidiabetic treatment , mean fasting blood glucose level, postprandial blood glucose level and mean HbA1c level 8 weeks after beginning HRT were 133.09±31.118 mg/dl, 182.09±91.169 mg/dl, and 6.1399%±1.523% respectively. The fall in mean fasting blood glucose level after using HRT was found to be statistically significant(p=0.002). The fall in mean postprandial blood glucose level was also found to be statistically significant (p=0.029). The fall in mean blood HbA1c values before and after HRT in the same patient population was also found to be statistically significant(p=0.000). Conclusion: A significant decrease was detected in the blood fasting and postprandial glucose , and HbA1c levels in postmenopausal women with type II DM after 8 weeks use of HRT. HRT was found to affect glycemic control positively.
