Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study is to compare the peritoneal fluid leptin concentration in infertile patient groups and especially to show the relation between unexplained infertility and peritoneal fluid leptin concentration by investigating the peritoneal fluid levels in unexplained infertility group. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six infertile patients who underwent laparoscopy were enrolled in this study. Laparoscopic findings and applied procedures were recorded. Peritoneal fluid was obtained from each patient at laparoscopy and leptin concentrations were determined. Patients were grouped as to be primary or secondary infertile, having menstrual disorders or not, having the body mass index above or below 25 kg/m2 and diagnosed as unexplained infertility or not. The peritoneal fluid leptin concentrations were compared in each group separately. Results: The mean age of the patients was 27.4 ±5.7 and 26 patients were primary infertile (72.2%), 10 patients were secondary infertile (27.8%). In laparoscopy, although normal findings were observed in 19 patients (52.8%), bilateral tubal occlusion in 12 (33.3%) patients, stage I-II endometriosis in 2 (5.6%) patients and polycyctic ovary in 3 (8.3%) patients were determined. The mean peritoneal leptin concentration was found to be 32.6 ±23.4 ng/ml (1.68-88.8) and there was no significant difference between the groups especially in unexplained group according to the peritoneal leptin concentrations (p>0.05). Conclusion: The finding of no significant difference among infertile patients that were grouped, especially in unexplained infertile patients with respect to peritoneal leptin concentrations showed that peritoneal leptin concentrations in infertile patients may be close to each others. However we think that, further investigations is needed to determine this subject.
