Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship between serum immunoglobulins and diabetic complications, glucose regulation diabetes duration and treatment regimens. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Fiftysix type II diabetic patients (mean age 54.4±14.4) and 20 non-diabetic patients (mean age 50.1 ± 16.2) were included to the study. Clinical and biochemical parameters of the patients were recorded. Serum immunoglobulin levels were measured. RESULTS: Serum IgA levels of patients with diabetes for more than 5 years were higher significantly than other groups (p<0.05). There was no correlation between serum IgG and IgM levels and diabetes duration. Patients with higher HbA1c-levels (HbA1c> %10) had higher levels of IgA (p<0.05) while IgG and IgM levels did not changed significantly. Patients with diabetic microvascular complications had higher levels of IgA too(p<0.05). Diabetic patients with retinopathy and neuropathy had lower levels of IgG, Serum IgA levels of patients treated with insulin were higher significantly. CONCLUSION: We suggested that higher serum IgA levels might be correlated with diabetic microvascular complications, diabetes duration and glucose regulation.
