Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Trichomoniasis is a leading cause of vulvovaginitis and cervicitis. Our purpose in this study was the comparison of wet-mount examination and culture of T.vaginalis in symptomatic and asymptomatic women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population included ninety women with the complain of vaginal discharge (the symptomatic group) and seventy-eight with other reasons (the asymptomatic group) attending the gynecologie outpatient clinic. We performed wet-mount preparation and culture of vaginal discharge with Oxoid Trichomonas Medium No2x24 (LR027). RESULTS: T.vaginalis was detected by culture or wet-mount examination in 10 (6%) of 168 women. The diagnostic value of wet-mount examination was found 60% when compared with the culture. The frequency of T.vaginalis infection was found same in in symptomatic and asymptomatic women (p= 0.341, Odds Ratio: 2.108, %95 Coinfidence Intervale: 0.52 - 8.45). CONCLUSION: Many patients who harbor T.vaginalis may be asymptomatic.
