Abstract

Objective: In this study we aimed to assess the risk factors that precipitated bleeding and mortality in upper GIS bleeding patients. Materials and Methods: One hundred sixty-one patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding were evaluated retrospectively. Symptoms of patients, number of repeated bleeding, intake of provoking medicines, other systemic diseases, endoscopie findings, mortality rate, blood transfusion requirements and the need for operation were recorded. Result: Upper GIS bleeding was observed most commonly in men of 3-6 decades. 161 patients, 81.9% of whom were performed within the first 24 hours, were performed endoscopy. Duodenal ulcer was observed in 20.4% patient by endoscopy. 16.1% of patients have been taking aspirin and 13.6% nonsteroid antiinflamantory drug. Liver cirrhosis (18.6%), hypertension (14.2%) and diabetes mellitus (11.8%) were determined which are known to be the causing common diseases upper gastrointestinal bleebing. Four or more units of blood were transfused to 48 patients. The average blood transfusion requirement was 2.59i2.19 units. 16 patients were sent to surgery. 14 Patients were lost. Conclusion: Because of high mortality and morbidity the patients with upper GIS bleeding must be follow up in intensive care units. Patients must be evaluated carefully especially with high age, aspirin and other NSAII drug used.
