Abstract

AIM: Breast cancer is the common cause of malignant disease among women. Although the survival rate of breast cancer is better than the other malignancies, mortality and the local recurrence rates of this disease are still an important problem. This study was designed to delineate the prognostic factors effecting survival and local recurrence in breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 67 breast cancer patients whose underwent surgical intervention between 1992-1997 were included in this study. The median follow-up time was 30 (8-76) months. The effects of 18 clinical and pathological parameters on survival and local recurrence were analyzed. We used Kaplan-Meier test for univariate survival analyzes and Cox regression test for multivariate survival analyzes. For determining the factors effecting local recurrence, we used Chi-square test for univariate analyzes and logistic regression test for multivariate analyzes. RESULTS: Young age, Columbia D stage, higher stages of both clinical and pathological TNM classification, big tumor size, axillary lymph node metastases and its number, axillary fat tissue invasion, multicentricity, skin invasion, pectoral muscle invasion, an nipple invasion were found to be bad prognostic factors for both disease-free and overall survival. Younger age, premenopausal disease, Columbia D stage and pectoral muscle invasion were found as the parameters increasing the risk of local recurrence.CONCLUSION: Young age, Columbia D stage and multicentricity were found as independent prognostic factors effecting disease-free and overall survival. For local recurrence, younger age and pectoral muscle invasion were found as independent factors.
