Abstract

PURPOSE: We performed this study in order to determine the knowledge level of young adult men about nutrition, and in order to investigate how they perceive their weight and height. MATERIAL AND METODS: 394 enlisted young adult men were experienced to a questionnaire form about nutrition. We investigated the relationship between true results and the socio-demographic properties of participants. Besides, participants were asked how they feel about their weights and then we investigated that how truly they could feel their weights by calculating their Body Mass Index. RESULTS: When we compared the nutrition knowledge level of the participants; there was statistically significant difference among the knowledge level according to the living place unit, educational situation and marital status (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference among knowledge level of the participants who had different income levels. According to the results obtained from the study, 69.8 percent of the obese participants and 36.9 percent of the normal participants perceive their weight status wrongly (obese ones perceived themselves normal and the normal ones perceived themselves slim. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that it is appropriate to give more education about the nutrition to the students during the elementary and secondary school; in order to give education to public about nutrition, one must use TV, radio, newspaper and magazines more frequently and more effectively; and it is necessary to educate about nutrition during the military profession.
