Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study, evaluation of gastric emptying time in type I and type II diabetic patients was aimed. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Gastric emptying of a digestible solid and liquid meal were measured with scintigraphic techniques in type I and II diabetic and control groups which each contain 25 subjects. In the diabetic patients, the relationships between gastric emptying and age, sex, glycaemic control, autonomic nerve function, microalbuminuria and upper gastrointestinal symptom score were examined. RESULTS: Gastric emtying time (for solid or liquid meal or both) was delayed in 60% of type I and 52% of type II diabetic patients. In type I and type II diabetic patients, there were no significant correlations between gastric emptying time and upper gastrointestinal symptom score, age, sex, disease duration, microalbuminuria and fasting blood glucose levels. In type I diabetic patients, gastric emptying time for solid and liquid meal was positively related to autonomic neuropathy. In type II diabetic patients, while there was a positive correlation between gastric emptying time for liquid meal and autonomic neuropathy and HbA1C, there was no correlation between gastric emptying time for solid meal and any parameter studied. CONCLUSION: Diabetic gastroparesis on a large scale can be explained by autonomic neuropathy. But also, hyperglycaemia itself may be responsible for delayed gastric emptying. Therefore, diabetic patients with gastroparesis should be examined for autonomic neuropathy and glycaemic control.

Özet

AMAÇ: Tip I ve tip II diabetes mellituslu (DM) hastalarda mide boşalma zamanının incelenmesi amaçlandı.
