Abstract

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is seen in nearly 10% of women during reproductive age. Menstrual irregularity, hirsutism, and infertility are major complaints. Arteriosclerosis may be seen in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) due to atherogenic profile of these patients in the long run. Our goal in this study was to investigate carotid artery doppler measurements in these patients. Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients with PCOS and 15 women with normal menstrual cycles were included in the study. Right carotid artery doppler measurements were done by a radiologist blind to the diagnosis of the patients and the control group by using Hewlett-Packard image point 5-10 MHz doppler equipment. Carotid artery intima-media wall thickness was measured and the resistance indices S/D, PI and RI were calculated. Results: Carotid artery intima-media wall thickness was significantly thicker in patients with PCOS (P=0,049); all resistance indices were lower than that of the control group (P=0.003; P=0.001; P=0.005). Conclusion: Patients with PCOS are accepted to have a higher for atherosclerosis, and different doppler measurements may demonstrate the development of premature arteriosclerosis in these patients.
