Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to define the frequently seen viral skin diseases in our region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The children who were examined at K.S.U School of Medicine outpatient department of dermatology between March 2000 and October 2001 were investigated according to their viral skin disease together with the age and sex. RESULTS: In this period, out of 862 examined children whose ages were varying 0 to 16, 85 had viral skin disease (9.86%). Among these patients 55.3% had verruca, 34.1% had molluscum contagiosum, 8.2% had herpes simplex, 1.2% had zona, and 1.2% had varicella. Of these patients 63.5% were female and 36.5% were male subjects. Molluscum contagiosum was the most common diagnosis at ages between 0 and 5, and verrucae at ages between 6 and 16. CONCLUSION: Verrucae and molluscum contagiosum are the most common viral dermatoses among children in our region. So as to decrease the problems arising from these skin diseases, we need to educate our nation.

Viral deri hastalığı saptanan olguların %63.5'i kız, %36.5'i ise erkek olgulardı.
