Abstract

Objective: To determine the effects of epidural analgesia to delivery and neonate. Material and Methods: In this study 30 pregnant women who attempted with $\geq$ 4 cm cervical dilatation and active labour phase versus 30 healthy pregnant who spontaneously followed during delivery were enrolled. In study group combine spino-epidural catheters were applied in sitting right back position with 18 gauge epidural needle between L4-5 space after 4 cm cervical dilatation. The patients pain was examined with VPS (Visual pain scala). Continuously fetal monitorisation and uterine tocography was made and Oxytocin induction was conducted to patients by observation of 3 or less number and shorter than 45 second duration uterine contractions during first and second phase of labour. The second phase was accepted as the duration from the ending of first phase to delivery and noted. The number patients that were conducted to oxytocin infusion, 1. and 5. minutes APGAR scores and birth weight of neonates, delivery ways and complications that were occurred during labour were recorded. The epidural catheters were ta ken off immediately after the delivery. All data were calculated as mean and standard deviation. Statistically analyze were examined by student t tests and P<0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: The first phase of the labour was found significantly longer in epidural analgesia group than control group in investigation of the Oxytocin application during labour and delivery ways in both groups(p<0.05). Whereas the duration of second phase observed longer in epidural analgesia group, there was not any significant difference between both groups(p>0.05). Cesarean section was detected in 3(%10) cases of epidural analgesia and only 1(%3) case of control group. The forceps application was noted in 4(%13) cases of epidural analgesia and 2(%7) cases of control group in the study(p>0.05). The oxytocin conduction rate was statistically higher in epidural analgesia group. While the %63 of epidural analgesia group had necessity for oxytocin during labour, in %27 of control group oxytocin induction was performed(p<0.01). There was not any significant difference between both groups in APGAR scores (p>0.05). Conclusion: Besides of the small number for a study group than literature series, in our study we detected that epidural analgesia was especially extended the first phase of labour but not any increase in complications according to epidural analgesia was observed and given a comfortable delivery experience to patients.
