Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the cerebral blood flow velocity in asphyctic newborns and to compare these values with the healthy newborns, and to evaluate the value of cerebral hemodynamic changes in asphyctic newborns for prediction of prognosis. Material and Method: Peak systolic velocity and end diastolic velocity were measured by the duplex Doppler ultrasonography in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries in 60 asphyctic and 50 healty newborn in the first 5 days of life. Resistive index and pulsatility index values were calculated. These parameters were compared by the student-t and Mann-Whitney U tests between the asphyctic and control group and the cases which died and survived in the asphyctic group. Results: There was no difference between the asphytic and control group in peak systolic velocity. In asphyctic group end diastolic velocity was higher, pulsatility index and resistive index values were lower than the control group. In asphyctic group there was no difference in the peak systolic velocity between the cases which were died and alive. In died cases end diastolic velocity were higher and pulsatility index and resistive index values lower than the alive ones. Conclusion: Duplex Doppler ultrasonography is a valuable, non-invasive method in the early diagnosis and follow up of the asphyxia.
