Abstract

Objective: The most important cause of iron deficiecny anemia in postmenaposal women and men is the chronic blood loss through the gastrointestinal system. The etiology of the blood loss must be investigated. Material and Method: Seventy-two patients (33 women, 39 men) aged 53±4.5 (26-68) were included in this study. All patients underwent both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. Results: Upper and lower gastrointestinal pathologies were seen in 44 (61.1%) and 12 (22.2%) patients, respectively. No gastrointestinal lesion was found in 16 (22.2%) patients. Out of 72 pateints, 15 (20.9%) had erosive gastritis, 11 (15.3%) doudenal ulcer, 6 (8.4%) hiatal hernia, 6 (8.4%) gastric ulcer, 4 (5.6%) hemorrhoids 3 (4.2%) gastric tumor, 3 (4.2%) diverticulitis, 2 (2.7%) colonic polyp, 2 (2.7%) colon tumor, 2 (2.7%) gastric polyp, 1 (1.3%) esophageal varices and 1 (1.3%) angiodysplasia. Overall malign tumor was detected in 6.9% of patients. Conclusion: The etiology of the iron deficiency anemia must be investigated in postmenapousal women and men by gastrointestinal endoscopy before attempting replacement therapy.

Onbeş (%20.9) olguda eroziv gastrit, onbir (%15.3) olguda doudenal ülser, altı (%8.4) olguda hiatal herni, altı (%8.4) olguda gastrik ülser, dört (%5.6) olguda hemoroid üç (%4.2) olguda gastrik tümör, üç (%4.2) olguda divertikül, iki (%2.7) olguda kolon polibi, iki (%2.7) olguda kolon tümörü, iki (%2.7) olguda gastrik polip, bir (%1.3) olguda ösofagus varisi ve 1 (%1.3) olguda anjiodisplazi saptandı.
