Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical features, treatment and prognosis of cases with endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS). Material and Methods: 17 cases with histopatologically diagnosed as ESS were analysed retrospectively. Results: The mean age of 17 cases was 47.4 (range 35-63 years). The mean age was 46.3 for low grade ESS (n=13), and was 51.2 for high grade ESS (n=4). ESS was diagnosed preoperatively with endometrial biopsies. In 5 cases all cases underwent surgery for primary treatment. Operation types included TAH+BSO (64.7%) in 11 cases, TAH+BSO+lymph node sampling (17.6%) in 3 cases, TAH+BSO+lymph node sampling+ommentectom (5.8%) in one cases, and TAH+wedge resection from both ovaries (11.7%) was performed for two young women. The stages for high grade ESS was IB, IC, IIB and IIIC. The mean follow-up time was 60.7 months for 4 cases with high grade ESS. The mean follow up time was 73.3 months for low grade ESS cases. Two cases with low grade ESS has been out of record after 2 and 62 months follow up Follow up of the other cases is still continuing. Conclusion: As a conclusion, it seems that the most effective treatment for patient with ESS is TAH+BSO followed by adjuvant therapy. The lengthening overall survival factors are early tumor stage, low myometrial invasion and low mitotic count.
