Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the relation among the serum leptin levels, insulin resistance and preeclampsia. Materials and Methods: This research was carried out on a study group of 85 pregnant women with preeclampsia and a control group of 85 healthy pregnant women who attended the Obstetrics and Gynecology department between May 2000 and June 2001. Serum leptin levels were determined by using the Active Human Leptin IRMA DSL-23100 (Diagnostic Systems Laboratories, Inc. Texas/USA) kit. Serum insulin levels were tested by the Immulite 2000 analyzer method. The degree of insulin resistance was demonstrated by HOMA coefficient. The data were analyzed by student T and Mann Whitney U tests. Results: Serum leptin levels of the preeclamptic group were significantly higher than the total control group (46.1±31.1 and 27.7±21.1; p<0.001 respectively). Serum Insulin and HOMA IR were not different between groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: According to these results, although serum leptin levels increase in preeclampsia, it was not an indicator in determining the severity of the disease. Since serum leptin levels were not related with HOMA IR and serum insulin levels in the overall preeclampsia group, the idea that insulin resistance has a role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia could not be supported.
