Abstract

Objective: Infection remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised children with malignancy. Empiric treatment of neutropenic fever in children should begin-immediately. This trial assessed the efficacy of meropenem versus ceftazidime-amikacin as empirical therapy for febrile neutropenia in pediatric cancer patients. Material and Methods: In our center between March 1999 and April 2003, 20 patients with hematological malignancies had 55 febrile neutropenic episodes. The first group (n: 28) received meropenem, while the second group (n: 27) was treated with ceftazidime plus amikacin. Result: The success rate with meropenem was 39% whereas with ceftazidime plus amikacin it was 66 percent. Recovery duration of fever and neutropenia was similar in both groups. Conclusion: It was concluded that in the treatment of neutropenic fever, the patients who were given meropenem monotherapy should be observed for ceftazidime plus amicasin combination therapy requirement.
