Abstract

Objective: We objected the association between percentage of body fat (PBF) with CRP and insulin resistance (IR). Material and Methods: Fifty patients aged 56.0±18.7 (13-81), 23 women-27 men, who admitted for nondiabetic diseases in our clinic between July 2004-February 2005 were involved in this study. PBF (bio-impedance analyze method was used with "Omron body fat monitor), body mass index (BMI), HOMA-IR [Fasting plasma insulin (mcU/ml)xFasting plasma glucose (mg/dl)/405], waist circumference (WC), serum level of CRP, fibrinogen and uric acid were measured in each subject. Results: BMI and WC were significantly higher at the patients that PBF is high (for men VYY ?25%, for women VYY?30%). There was high positive correlation between PBF with BMI and WC (r=0.75, p<0.001; r=0.63, p<0.001; respectively). There was significant but low-intermediate correlation between PBF with IR (r=0.33, p=0.018). There wasn't correlation between PBF with CRP, uric acid and fibrinogen. Conclusion: The prevalence of IR is significantly higher in the persons increased PBF. Therefore, these individuals should be followed up intensively for diabetes mellitus and other atherosclerotic risk factors.
