Abstract

Objective: To investigate the circulating levels of adhesion molecules (VCAM-I, ICAM-I) as the markers for activation of the immune system, emphasize the existence of endothelial damage and the role of adhesion molecules in preeclamptic patients. Material and Methods: 47 patients with preeclampsia and eclampsia were compared to 42 healthy pregnant women. Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained and serum levels of VCAM-I, ICAM-I were measured by using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Results: Concentrations of VCAM-I and ICAM-I were significantly higher (p<0.0005) in preeclamptic women compared to healthy pregnant patients. The results were similar when the patients were clinically grouped as mild and severe preeclampsia. Conclusions: Increased circulating levels of adhesion molecules (VCAM-I and ICAM-I) may contribute to the endothelial damage that occurs with preeclampsia and eclampsia. This increment does not correlate with the severity of the disease. These results may indicate the immune activation in the pathophysiologic mechanisms of preeclampsia.
