Abstract

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular parasite which is a causitive agent of several diseases like trachoma, Lenfogranuloma venereum (LGV), inclusion conjuctivit and genitourinary infections in women, men and newborns. Because of transmitting sexually and usually being asymptomatic, the agent's incidence has increased in population more. In keeping away from the diseases which C. trachomatis is responsible, knowing the biology, clinical table and diagnostic methods of the agent has great importance. The detection of C. trachomatis by using PAP smears which are mainly used for cancer screening routinly is also pre-determinative method for application of the other diagnostic methods. Due to these facts, in this review, the general features and the diagnostic methods of C. trachomatis have been given in detail. The importance of PAP methods in diagnosis has been also clarified.
