Abstract

In this study, the treatment results were evaluated in a total of 17 cases (9 dogs and 8 cats) diagnosed with indolent epithelial erosion. While local medical treatment alone was given to 6 of the cases, local medical treatment following debridement was carried out in 10 cases. In the remaining 1 case, tarsoraphy was performed after debridement. In 3 cases where scar tissue developed in the cornea during treatment, tarsoraphy was performed following superficial keratectomy. As a result of the treatment methods employed; while there was no evident scar tissue obstructing vision in 11 patients (5 cats, 6 dogs), slight scar tissue developed in 3 patients (2 cats, 1 dog) and distinct scar tissue developed in 3 patients (1 cat, 2 dogs). In the 3 patients with distinct scar tissue, it was observed that loss of vision did not to affect quality of life due to the paracentral positioning of the lesions. It was concluded that, in the treatment of indolent epithelial erosion of the cornea, successful results may be achieved whether using local medical treatment or performing tarsoraphy following either debridement or superficial keratectomy.
