Abstract

This study investigated seroprevalence of equine viral arteritis (EVA) in Kars and Ardahan districts. For this purpose, 400 horses from these districts were blood sampled and specific antibodies to equine viral arteritis were investigated in serum by means of enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Of the population sampled, seroprevalence of EVA was 8.75% (35/400). Seroprevalence was 9.5% (19/200) in Kars and 8% (16/200) in Ardahan. Seropositivity according to gender revealed that the proportion of seropositivity was 11.55% (26/225) in male and 5.14% (9/175) in females. In conclusion, this was the first study to report the presence and prevelance of EVA in horses in Kars and Ardahan where horse has important contribution to economic and day to day life of human and preventive measures should be taken to control the infection.
