Abstract

Summary Recently, in the field of veterinary surgery, clinical applications made on horses have indicated that alpha2 adrenoceptor agonists are valuable agents for horse's anaesthesia. These agents used as preanaesthetic reduce the effects of adrenoceptor agents which release epinephrine and norepinephrine in their ends. Alpha2 adrenoceptor agonists are used as preanaesthetic agents before injectable and inhalant agents. Similarly, they are administered before local, regional and epidura! anaesthesia. The first alpha2 adrenoceptor agonists used in veterinary medicine is xylazine. Detomidine, medetomidine, romifidine and clonidine come after this. Appropriate dosage of alpha2 adrenoceptor agonists should be calculated according to required analgesia, sedation and their possible side effect on some organs mainly cardiovascular systems. All a.2- adrenoseptör agonists cause sedation, analgesia, hypotension, bradycardia, increased urination, decreased salivation, decreased imotility in gut, stimulation in uterus, mydriasis and decreased intraocular pressure in eyes. The main advantages of these agents are that their effects can be reversed if required.
