Abstract

Crime is one of the factors affecting individual and social welfare. Therefore, it is one of the most important research topics in the economic literature. In this study, it is investigated the relationship between three different crime concepts and education and various socio-economic variables by employed panel data at NUTS3 level. The basic hypothesis of the paper is that the higher educational level is tend to lower the crime rate. It was included income, unemployment, immigration and household size as control variables in the estimated models. And financial crime, theft and violent crime were used as dependent variables in the model. Empirical results do not support our basic hypothesis. however, empirical results show that there is a strong relationship between crime and immigration, household size, unemployment. In these variables, immigration and household size display demographic and social structure and unemployment displays economic structure.
