Abstract

In this study, the effects of temperature, a 5 o C temperature upshift and a 5 o C temperature downshift on the settling properties of activated sludge was examined in lab-scale sequencing batch reactor. The reactors were fed with wastewater from the Elazığ Watewater Treatment Plant. In the reactor operated at 20 o C, it was obtained sludge with lower sludge volume index, lower turbidity of effluent and higher sedimentation velocity. The increasing (20 o C’den 25 o C and 30 o C’e) and decreasing (20 o C’den 5 o C, 10 o C and 15 o C’e) of temperature caused higher sludge volume index, turbidity and lower sedimentation velocity. A 5 o C temperature upshift (from 20 o C to 25 o C) and a 5 o C temperature downshift (from 25 o C to 20 o C) were associated with increasing of sludge volume index.
