Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Nineteen cases of synchronous primary endometrium and ovarian carcinomas treated in Gynecologic Oncology Department of SSK Ankara Maternity Hospital between 1991 and 1996 were analyzed retrospectively. STUDY DESIGN: The cases were divided into two separate categories based on the histology of the carcinoma. Those with concomitant endometrioid carcinomas of the endometrium and ovary were classified as Group A (9/19), while synchronous tumors with differing histological characteristics were assorted as Group B (10/19). The two groups were compared according to the histopathologic features of the tumor, stage and the progress of the disease. RESULTS: The mean age was 57 within a range of 49 to 75. Average follow-up was 43.1 ±21.8 months. While 13 patients lived without any symptoms of the disease and a patient had recurrence, a patient from Group A and 4 patients from Group B died of primary causes of the disease. Survival rates were found to be 89% and 60% in Group A and group B respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with synchronized carcinomas of similar histology had a better prognosis and a higher rate of survival when compared with synchronized carcinomas of non-similar histology.
