Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the subendothelial content of fibronectin and collagen type IV in the umbilical vessels of hypertensive mothers as a possible mechanism of umbilical vessel injury. STUDY DESIGN: Ten pregnant women with chronic hypertension at term comprised the study group and ten healthy pregnant women with normal pregnancy at term comprised the control group. Quantitative and qualitative alterations of fibronectin and collagen type IV distribution in the subendothelial region of umbilical arteries and veins of the two groups were investigated by immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Fibronectin and collagen type IV content were not found to be significantly different in the umbilical artery and the vein (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: We concluded that subendothelial fibronectin and collagen type IV content of umbilical vessels is not altered in hypertensive mothers as a possible mechanism of vascular damage.
