Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of labor and delivery on maternal serum levels of troponin T and compare them with the levels of other markers (ie, myoglobin and creatine kinase MB) of myocardial injury measured during this period. STUDY DESIGN: In 94 healthy women at term in labor, troponin T, myoglobin and creatine kinase MB levels were determined within 15 minutes after delivery and whether the levels of biochemical markers were effected by duration of active phase of labor, parity, oxytocin augmentation and fetal weights were evaluated. RESULTS: 15 minutes after delivery; levels of CK-MB and myoglobin were detected to be increased statistically as parity, duration of active phase of labor increase and as oxytocin augmentation was used. However, troponin T levels were not affected from these parameters stastically. Also there were no correlations between biochemical markers and fetal weights CONCLUSION: In normal pregnancies with uncomplicated deliveries, maternal troponin concentrations were not clinically significantly increased. Troponin as opposed to CK-MB and myoglobin, can be used to determine the myocardial injury without being effected by the duration of active phase, oxytocin augmentation, parity and fetal weight.
