Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether plasma levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein A-l and apolipoprotein B are significantly increased in women with preeclampsia compared with concentrations seen in normal pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Plasma concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein A-l and apolipoprotein B were measured in 10 women with preeclampsia and in 10 healthy pregnant controls matched for age and gestational age. RESULTS: Women with preeclampsia exhibited higher median plasma triglyceride (339 versus 167.5, P>0.05), higher median plasma total cholesterol (277 versus 227.5, P>0.05), lower median plasma HDL-cholesterol (58.5 versus 69, P>0.05) and higher median plasma LDL-cholesterol (146 versus 123, P>0.05) compared with controls. CONCLUSION: Women with preeclampsia exhibit elevated concentrations of plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins in the circulation. These particles are potential contributers to endothelial dysfunction and expression of preeclampsia.
