Abstract

Aim: To present the screening and treatment results of newborns who were evaluated for retinopathy of prematurity in Harran University Medical Faculty, Ophthalmology Department. Metod: Medical records of premature newborns who were evaluated for retinopathy of prematurity between June 2013 and June 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. The newborns were being followed in Pediatrics Department of our hospital or referred for risk of retinopathy of prematurity from other centers. The newborns with gestational age less than 37 weeks and birth weight less than 3500 gr were included. The infants with retinopathy of prematurity who needed treatment were treated with indirect laser photocoagulation. Results: Atotal of 219 newborns who met study criteria were included in the study. The mean gestational age was 31,8±2,5 weeks (24-37 weeks) and of these cases, 112 (%51,1), were male and 107 (%48,9) were female. Retinopathy of prematurity with various stages was present in 52 (%23,7) of the cases. Of these, 22 (%42,3) were in grade 1, 14 (%26,9) were grade 2, 15 (%28,8) were grade 3. Aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity was observed in one case (%1,9). The mean birth weight and gestational age of newborns who developed retinopathy of prematurity were 1492,9±303,9 gr and 30,5±2,1 weeks and these values were significantly less than those of newborns without retinopathy of prematurity (p<0,001 for both). Diode laser photocoagulation was performed in 15 newborns. Anti-VEGF injection was performed prior to laser treatment for the case with aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity. At final visit, favorable outcome was achieved in all cases who were treated. No complication was observed except mild preretinal hemorrhage in two eyes of two patients. Conclusion: According to our results, screening the premature newborns with a gestationa age equal or less than 34 weeks appears to be appropriate for this region. Lower birth weight and gestational age were important risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity. Diode laser photocoagulation was an effective in all cases without significant complication.
