Abstract

To investigate the role of the changes in leptin and beta endorphin levels in weight loss following an electroacupuncture application in obese females. Method: Electroacupuncture was applied to 20 females which were 41.5±4.7 years old and have body mass index of 36.0+2.7; and a diet program was applied to 20 females which were 42.3±4.4 yrs old and have body mass index of 34.9+3.2. Results: The mean weight in the electroacupuncture group was decreased from 94.6+10.0 kg to 90.4+10.0 kg, and in the diet group from 85.0+8.5 kg to 82.4+8.4 kg. Decrease of serum leptin levels in both electroacupuncture and diet groups, and an increase of serum beta endorphin level in the electroacupuncture group were observed. Conclusion: In addition to decrease in serum leptin levels which is parallel to weight loss observed in both electroacupuncture and diet groups increase in serum beta endorphin level in electroacupuncture group may contribute to weight loss in obese females.

Bulgular: Ortalama ağırlık elektroakupunktur uygulanan grupta 94.6+10.0 kg'dan 90.4+10.0 kg'a, diyet uygulanan grupta ise 85.0+8.5 kg'dan 82.4+8.4 kg'a düştü. Elektroakupunktur ve diyet programı uygulanan gruplardaki serum leptin düzeylerinde azalma; elektroakupunktur uygulanan grupta serum beta endorfin düzeyinde yükselme görülmüştür. Sonuç: Hem elektroakupunktur hem de diyet uyguladığımız gruplarda, ağırlık kaybına paralel serum leptin düzeylerinde azalma gözlenmesine ek olarak elektroakupunktur uyguladığımız grupta, serum beta endorfin düzeyinin yükselmesinin obezlerde ağırlık kaybına katkı sağlayabileceğini düşünmekteyiz.
