Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to see the morphologic changes of thymuses of mice, by adding extra zinc to their normal diet. Methods: We supplied zinc sulphate (10 mg/kg) to the 18 months old Balb/c mice (n=17) in tap water in addition to their normal diet and compared them with a control group (n=17) which fed with normal diet. After the determination of weights and volumes, thymuses are examined histologically by light microscobe. Results: After eight weeks, the extra zinc supplemented mice thymuses increased by weight and volume than the control group. The increases in thymus volumes were significant (P=0,022) whereas the increases of thymus weights were not. The histological sections of thymuses had normal appearance without any connective tissue grow and showed no significant differences between the control group and the experimental group Conclusion: Oral zinc supplementation has possitive effects on increasing the thymus dimensions homogenously, but no significant histologic differences were present between the experimental and control groups.
