Abstract

It has been shown that eosinophilic cationic protein derived from eosinophils, has an important role in the pathogenesis of airway inflammation and epithelial damage in any type of asthma The aim of this study was to investigate both the serum levels of eosinophilic cationic protein and possible relationship between serum eosinophilic cationic protein levels and clinical activity in patients with acute asthma attack. Eosinophilic cationic protein levels were measured in sera of 32 patients and of 32 age and gender matched healthy volunteers during acute attack, 24 hours and 7 days after attack. Serum eosinophilic cationic protein levels in the patients with asthma during attack were significantly higher than those of the controls (37.7±7.5 µg/L vs 7.6±0.52 µg/L, respectively, p<0.05). After24 hours, while the patients taking inhaled steroids, the mean eosinophilic cationic protein levels of patients were 12.6 ±1.0 µg/1, and after 7 days, 20.2±5 µg/L and still statistically different from mean eosinophilic cationic protein level of the control group (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between the eosinophilic cationic protein levels and symptom score of the patients during the acute attack and 24 hours after attack. It is concluded that serum eosinophilic cationic protein levels might be used in the assessment of the treatment and monitoring of the patients with acute attack.
